Ice Cream, Mac N' Cheese, Chocolate Milk

I had quite the scare this week.  I look forward to Monday's because it's my day off and I get to be with Silas all day.  This past Monday we had no appointments, no scheduled phone calls, nothing going on.  I was really looking forward to just hanging out with my baby.  I decided that it would be a good idea to begin the transition to a formula that is dairy-based.  The Dr. suggested we do this after he turned 6-months.  Silas is over 7-months old now so I thought I would finally do it.  So I bought some Gerber 'Soothe' formula.  I mixed his carrots and oatmeal like I normally do.  I even prepared his pears because he seemed a little fussy (teething).  He loves the cold pears on his gums.  I began to feed him and he just didn't seem interested in eating.  So I gave him the bottle which contained 2 scoops of his old stuff and 1 scoop of the new Gerber.  He gobbled those 6-ounces down so quick!  After he was finished I was cleaning him up and he began to throw up.  Violently throw up.  It was so bad I was pulling the phlegm out of his mouth and holding him upside down to get it all out.  This happened several times.  He was having a hard time breathing because he kept throwing up.  I thought he was done so we went into the bathroom to get cleaned up.  He threw up more.  I began to take his clothes off and he was all red.  He was getting a severe rash and his face was super red beginning to swell.  I was panicking at this point.  This all went down in 10 minutes.  I remember calling my Mom, Nick, and Heidi.  Heidi told me to call 911 so I did.  There were about 8 paramedics and 4 cops in the condo.  By this time Silas wasn't getting worse but was still in bad shape.  They hooked up his carrier to the stretcher, I jumped in the ambulance and we sat there for a few minutes while they tried to find a vein for the IV to give him Benadryl.  They couldn't find one so they began to drive to Children's.

Both Nick's met me there.  They put a little hospital gown on and gave him Benadryl orally.  He was already doing so much better.  I'm pretty sure he puked everything up and some.  Surprisingly we weren't there for a long time, we got discharged about 12:30 and had arrived around 10am.  Here's a picture of my baby laying in the hospital bed.  I put his own clothes on after we knew we were going home.

We saw his Pediatrician this week.  We're going to see an allergy specialist but basically Silas won't have any dairy until he is 1 years old.  I'm hoping he outgrows it.  I can't imagine a life without Ice Cream, Mac N' Cheese, and washing it all down with a big glass of Chocolate Milk.  On top of the allergic reaction, he has an ear infection and bronchialitis.  I'm pretty sure I have that too.  I've been sick since Sunday and it appears to have only gotten worse.  We'll see how I feel but I might have to see the Dr. tomorrow.  If I do this is probably what she'll say:

Besides the crazy week, we're looking forward to the weekend!  Nick and I are both off tomorrow.  Sunday will be nice to see his family for dinner and we'll do brunch at Heidi's.  HAPPY EASTER!

Taking Responsibility for Your Destiny

Lately I've been challenged at work.  It's not the depressed industry that I work in nor is it the actual work I do.  It's a few people that like to throw sand in the sand box.  For the last 10 years I have grown in my career and completed my education with a Bachelor and Masters degrees.  Somewhere in the last couple years I've ended up getting sand everywhere.  In my eyes, in my nose, and now in my ass crack.  We all know what that feels like and it sucks!  I can't understand why these people are throwing sand at me.  I think about it again and I remember that I don't care.  I have the ability to get up, run to the ocean, and wash off. A good friend of mine showed me this website:  http://www.dailyom.com/  It gives daily inspirations, and today's helped me remember that I do have control over what happens.  I'm super excited that my fate is in my own hands.

Happy Friday!

Snowy Days & Skittles

The last couple weeks we've had a few "Snowy Day's".  Sometimes it's enough snow to give me that itch again.  The itch of wanting to pack up my skis and head out west.  Aspen is my first choice.  They have everything I need there.  3 resorts, great restaurants, high-end shopping, and most importantly the mountains.  If I could wake up every morning with this view I would be pretty happy.  I love the 'Skittles' at Snowmass.  It's the shorter Gondola and is called 'Skittles' because they're different colored.  I would love to take Silas here on the weekends.  I imagine the day would start off with a great breakfast by Nick.  I could pack our lunch and some snacks.  We would then go to the mountain and ski for a few hours.  Hopefully hit some fresh powder,  meet up with friends and enjoy the sun.  Afterwards we would go home, take off our ski boots and sit in the hot tub for a little while.  Silas would probably take a nap.  Then we'd get ready for dinner, probably something on the grill.  My parents and Heidi, Nick, & Jellie would come over.  After dinner we'd sit by the fire place outside.  The kids would play and the adults would just watch.  Sounds perfect to me.

Finally Friday

Maybe it's because of Silas getting his helmet or just getting over a cold but this has been one long week and I'm so glad it's over.  Here are some pics that were taken over the last couple weeks.

Auntie Auntie Dixie

I love mornings with my two favorites

I know he's too big for the vibrating seat but he still loves it!  Wouldn't you?

Silas eats carrots, sweet potato, and whatever his Ba-ba gives him.
We usually put his arms under the tray so it's not so messy.  We just learned this trick.

Always smiling!

In his cousin Keira's princess chair.  Doesn't he look old?!

Sleeping peacefully at Ba-ba's.  I see Sophie the Giraffe, we recently lost her.  I need to buy another.

Gi-gi watched Silas when Jack and Ba-ba went to the Dr.

Doc Band - Silas's Helmet

Having full responsibility for another human being that I love more than I ever thought possible can be tough.  Recently we had to make the decision to get or not get Silas the Doc Band (helmet).  We took him in for a consultation and the measurements showed that he had moderate Brachycephaly with Plagiocephaly. Big words that I can't even pronounce but essentially he has a flat spot on one side of his head with some flatness at the base of his skull too.  We all want the best for our kids even when it comes to the shape of their heads.  Not just for the physical appearance like if he would be an Olympic swimmer and shave his head but also for other reasons such as level ears for wearing sunglasses at night like his Mamma or to avoid jaw misalignment.  Silas was fitted for his helmet a couple weeks ago.  Silas loves to kick around so we ended up having to do the casting twice.  It sucked, mostly because a stocking is put over his head, a whole cut out for his mouth and you can't see his eyes.  Heidi told me about her experience with Ellie's helmet so I was prepared and handled it better than I thought.  As soon as we were done, I picked him up and he immediately stopped crying.  Luckily my Mom came along and really put me at ease too.  Don't we always feel better when Mom is there?  I know I do and I think my Baby Silas does too.

Silas got his helmet 10 days later and he has been wearing it for 5 days now.  The first couple days were a little rough.  More on me than him.  He didn't even notice he had it on but I wondered if it was too tight or bothering him.  I know the first night he slept with it on I thought about it all night.  So the first day he wore it he had a little pinkness under the strap area.  We've been watching it and it seems to go away quickly so it's not to be concerned about.  I'll take him weekly to get adjustments as his head continues to grow.  I'm excited to decorate it.  Ellie thinks we should definitely put stickers on it.  Jack was funny too, he was pointing at Silas when Heidi got home that day.  Almost trying to say, 'Look Mommy, Silas has a helmet!'.  Ellie and Jack are so good with Silas.  We cannot wait for another baby Roberts.

Some pinkness from the helmet strap.

Friendship

My co-worker and really good friend Michelle has her last day of work at MGIC today.  I screamed with joy when she told me she was leaving.  I am also secretly depressed about it.  As some may know my job hasn't been the funnest one.  When I first started in my current role a little over 2 1/2 years ago I sat next to Michelle.  A couple months later she was going to Colorado and I wanted to go too so I just booked my flight! We spent some time with a friend of mine and a mutual friend of ours, exploring and just being in the mountains.  While I think of myself as being able to make friends easily I thank Michelle for being a person easy to be friends with.  I thank her for always lending an ear and listening to the good and bad.  I thank her for letting me 'crash' her Colorado trip.  I thank her for the support and professional advice she always has to offer.  I thank her for being a trusted and smart co-worker.  Overall I thank her for the friendship and in the midst of the 'craziness' I thank her for making me laugh.

Congratulations Michelle!  I know we'll remain friends for a long time!  This quote reminds me of you:

“If you have good friends, no matter how much life is sucking , they can make you laugh.”
